- Maxillofacial surgery is a surgical discipline that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of pathologies of the oral cavity and of the face.
Originated as war surgery for traumas, maxillofacial surgery focuses on the oral cavity, jaws and occlusion.
He broadened his sphere of interest towards other surgical specialties such as opthalmology (surgery of the orbit), otorhinolaryngology (nose, paranasal sinuses and neck surgery), plastic surgery (micro-surgery and cosmetic surgery), neurosurgery (cranio-facial surgery).
Currently the maxillofacial surgery deals with all head and neck surgeries and, in particular, the inflammatory pathology, congenital and acquired malformations, dentofacial deformities, trauma, benignant and malignant neoplasia, edentulism and jaws atrophies, pathology of salivary glands, temporomandibular disorders and facial unaesthetic features.
